One month old!!

Today I turned one month old! My Aunt Kristen bought me these cool stickers to use for my monthly photos. You can get some of your own at http://www.stickybellies.com/ My parents can hardly believe that they survived their first month. Mommy says that it has been the most challenging, but best, month of her whole life. We have been so lucky to have the extra help from grandmas and grandpas the past four weeks. We're all a little nervous about the next month as it will just be mommy, daddy and me. Here's what has been happening around here:

  • During the night, I can go for about 4 hours between feedings...a couple times I have gone longer than 5 hours but not a regular occurence yet.

  • I weigh 9 pounds, 11 ounces

  • I made my first trip to mom and dad's favorite Mexican food restaurant, Rio Mambo - I slept the whole time - I loved the noise!

  • If I have a choice between being held and entertaining myself, I prefer to be held. Mom calls me high maintenance, whatever that means.

  • Dad has watched me twice all by himself, one time I cried the whole time and one time I slept the whole time. He is doing a great job.

Here are some pictures...enjoy!!

Newborn Pics

I just got Grayson's newborn pictures back which we had done when she was just 6 days old. It already seems like such a long time ago when she was so sleepy and small! We had the pictures done by Erin at Splendor Photography (http://www.splendorphotography.net/). She did an amazing job...thanks Erin!! Here is the link to see them all: (a couple of my favorites are below)

Time flies when you're having fun...

Well, Grayson's 3 week birthday came and went and I totally missed the blog update. It's scary how fast the weeks seem to be flying by. Each day still seems to blend into the next and most days, I have to think twice about what day of the week it is. Today is Tuesday and I cannot believe that my baby will be one month old on Saturday! We have had lots of very important visitors in July including all of Grayson's grandparents and her Aunt Kristen from Michigan. Aunt Jaime is busy in Georgia with a newborn of her own (I know, what timing!). Grayson continues to grow and change everyday. She's kind of unpredictable sometimes sailing through the whole day as happy as can be and other days being more on the fussy side. She keeps us on our toes to say the very least. Here are some pictures from the last week.

Happy Two Week Birthday to Grayson!

Today I turned two weeks old! I marked the milestone with a trip to see Dr. Hayward. The big news out of the appointment was that I am up to 8 pounds, 1 oz, almost a full pound above my birth weight, so even though breast feeding has been kind of tough on mom, she is doing a great job and making sure that I have plenty to eat! Mom decided that to commemorate the day I should put on one of my party dresses that Uncle Len, Aunt Gail and cousin Candace sent me. We took a bath first, then I was very alert for my photo shoot. Hope you enjoy the pictures. Here are some highlights from my second week:

  • Everyone thinks I am very alert for a baby my age - I have skipped a couple naps already because there is just too much to take in and check out!

  • I am still not a huge fan of the bassinet, I prefer to sleep in my newborn napper. Mom tries to sneak in a couple bassient sleeping sessions each day.

  • Diaper changing is getting slightly less traumatic -- I only wail about 50% of the time now!

2 weeks old today!

I love looking out the window!

There is so much to see outside...I wish it weren't so hot - it's the 2nd hottest summer on record here!

Mommy asked Grandma to take a picture with her in it since she was actually wearing make up today! And then Grandma got a picture with me.

One Week Old

Happy 1 week birthday Grayson Marie! The past week has been a blur for your dad and I, but although the past seven days and nights all seem to run together, we have loved every minute of it. Each hour that passes you reveal a little bit more of your personality, giving us little glimpses into who you are going to become. Here are a few highlights of your first week:

  • Due to a blood type incompatibility between you and I, you developed jaundice within 12 hours of being born. Luckily, the great doctors and nurses at the hospital knew to look for it and were able to treat it before it got out of control. You only had to spend about 36 hours "under the lights" before you were cleared to go home.

  • I have been averaging about 3 1/2 hours of sleep throughout the night. I try to make some of it up with two daily naps (or "mini comas" as I like to call them). We refer to the hours between 12 and 3 am as the "witching hour" as you seem to have the most difficult time sleeping during that period of time

  • Nursing has been SO challenging in SO many ways but every time you look up at me, satisfied after a feeding, it makes all of the pain, soreness and emotional angst melt away and is replaced with just utter love for doing the best thing possible for you.

  • You hate having your diaper changed - 90% of the time you wail - the other 10% you are normally still sleeping so don't realize what is going on. (once you figure it out, you wail)

  • You went on your first outing withou even realizing it. We managed to take you to the Killeen's house for a wedding shower and back home again all without you even waking up or leaving your carseat.

  • You had your first photo shoot - newborn photos! The shoot ended up taking 4 hours and involved two feedings, four wardrobe changes, one location change and lots of crying, pooping and peeing. Boy, it wore me out, but based on the sneak peak I got of the pictures, I know it was worth it.

We can't wait to see what week 2 will hold!
First time in your swing - I think the jury is still out on this one!

Early morning nap.

Sneak peak of newborn photo shoot!

First 4th of July

The big highlight of our Independence Day was getting Grayson fixed up in her 4th of July onesie and taking some pictures! (how much things change with a baby at home!) Up until the 4th, she hadn't spent more than a few minutes at a time awake. However, this afternoon she spent almost a 2 hour stretch awake and alert. It was fun to see her looking around and checking everything out for the first time.

1st Bath

After a couple days at home, we decided it was time to take the plunge and give Grayson her first at home bath. Although she doesn't look too happy in some of these pictures, she actually didn't seem to mind it too much. We took this to mean she is going to love the water....we can't wait until next year when we can start taking her to the pool!

Coming Home

On Saturday, July 2nd, we were discharged from the hospital. We were so excited to escape the confines of our small hospital recovery room and eager to get home to get to know our daughter. A big highlight of coming home was Grayson meeting her "brother" Herbie. Herbie was very excited to see us and took a bit of an interest in this new "little person."

Clean bill of health and ready to go home!

All set and ready to go

Meet Grayson Marie Polanski

Yesterday, on June 30th, at 11:38 AM, Grayson Marie came bursting into our world. Like our twisting and turning journey to parenthood, her arrival didn't go exactly as planned either. We were scheduled to begin the induction process on Tuesday, June 29th at 5pm. Throughout the day on Tuesday, I had been having mild contractions, but I still wasn't expecting what they told me at the hospital - we can't induce you because you are too far progressed - it was quite a surprise to find out that I was already close to 3 cm dialated and about 60% effaced. But of course it wasn't quite as easy as just turning around and going back home, because i was having contractions, they wanted me to stick around for monitoring. So we spent about 4 hours at the hospital, my contractions were getting more painful, I was thinking, OK, this is it! They checked me again at about 9:30pm (after about 4 hours) and I hadn't made any progress at all - I was shocked! They said, since I hadn't progressed, I was likely in the very early stages of labor and it would be fine if I wanted to go back home so i would "be more comfortable." I was a little hesitant because some of the contractions were getting pretty intense, but I figured, if I wasn't progressing, they must not really be that bad. Also, there wasn't a pull-out couch or anywhere for Steve to comfortably rest. I figured if labor was going to move this slow, I owed him his rest while he could still get it. So...home we went! Boy was that a mistake! When I got home, the contractions that had been a little painful in the hospital now seemed to be getting worse and worse. They had sent me home with two Ambien, which I took, but that didn't do much beyond force me into a half comotose sleep in between the contractions which were growing progressively stronger. While in early labor, i was able to change positions and easily breathe through the pain, these contractions seemed to be paralyzing, and I couldn't find any relief. I woke up steve several times throughout the night, but he just assumed that i was overreacting and I just needed to try to relax and get some rest. (he feels really bad about that now ;-)) Finally at 3:30, I woke him up and said, i can't do this anymore, we HAVE to go to the hospital now - I needed drugs! He protested slightly, but then gave in. Luckily, when we got back they had a room waiting for me since we were planning on coming back in the AM regardless to have my water broken. They checked me and the nurse said, wow, you have really made alot of progress in the last few hours, you are at 6 cm and and 80% effaced. She then asked if I'd like the epidural - i have to say, i think the fact that I was already at a 6cm made me think twice about not getting it...just four more centimeters I thought. But that thought was quickly thrust out of my mind with the onset of the next contraction. I'm glad I didn't try to tough it out any longer because it still took about an hour to get the epidural since they needed to do the necessary bloodwork, get the doc, etc. The epidural wasn't bad at all, the worst part was needing to hold perfectly still. Luckily, he timed it well between my contractions. Almost instantly, i felt relief and after that, labor and delivery was a breeze. I will say that I do believe the epidural slowed down my labor, but honestly, i welcomed the chance to catch my breath after the 6 hour stretch I had been through. About 7 hours after recieving the epidural, i easily pushed Grayson out into the world. She did great throughout all of labor and delivery, her heart rate never fluctuating much at all. She cried immediately after entering the world - it was the sweetest sound two parents had ever heard. Here is our first family picture taken by my OBGYN who was awesome throughout this whole process for us. We are such happy and proud parents!
